Tata reframes strategy to increase Nano sales

Tata motors have finally realized the reason for their low sales figures of Tata Nano. So, now they have just the right strategy to boost the sales. As per this new strategy the car maker is now going to change the perception that Tata Nano is a poor man’s car. Already this strategy has started bearing fruits and the sales have improved considerably. Even Mr Ratan Tata, the chairman of Tata Motors, has admitted this mistake regarding the distribution and marketing of Tata Nano and so now they are trying to put it right.

An official statement regarding improved sales figure was given by the VP of Tata Motors, Mr. R Ramakrishna. He said that their strategy has just managed to give right boost to the sales. As a part this new strategy the carmaker has taken care of every step of reaching out to their customers. So carmaker has rethought about their dealerships, their network strategy even their finance collaborators.According to Mr Ramakrishna all the people who intend to buy the Tata Nano do not like going to the full-grown car showroom to buy their car. They would prefer an exclusive Nano showroom. Understanding this consumer behavior Tata Motors is now going to set up as many as 105 exclusive Tata Nano showrooms along with 250 special kiosks. He added that carmaker has plans to open exclusive outlets in different Tier-IV and Tier –III cities in India.

Another winning strategy of the car maker was to market this innovative model in different ways for customers of diverse age groups. Though we do not have the exact sales figures but the officials have confirmed that the numbers have gone up. So, the company is now elated by the new found success. As for the future it seems that positive response to this model will make possible the usage the production of the full capacity at the Sanand manufacturing plant.

Tata skeptical to foray in premium sedan segment

In the recently concluded Auto Expo every car maker gave a glimpse of their future strategy. Some of them chose to launch and unveil their upcoming models while other showcased their concept cars. A visit to Tata motor’s stall at the event showed that the auto major intends to concentrate on extremely low costing cars and it may venture into the hybrid and electric segment.

What was missing here was there was no model for the elite segment, all in all it seems Tata is going to skip the segment. Even the concepts for this segment that were showcased at other shows failed to make it to the production stage. So, we neither had the Tata Magna or Tata Prima the concepts seeing the light of day. As we all may recollect Prima concept was an important feature of Tata’s in its convoy for the 2009 event at Geneva. Even now Tata Prima pictures from the 10 edition of the India expo only show that this model was applauded at the show but reports are it will remain a dream as the automajor has no intention of producing it.

It is not that this major player in the automobile sector has not ventured into the premium segment but it was always with little success. It is worth mentioning that when Tata Motors had many dreams when it introduced Tata Aria for the Indian car enthusiast but this venture failed miserably as the consumers never pardoned the carmaker for the wrong pricing of this model. The hard lesson learned by this experiment was that a model priced at Rs 11.61 lakh will directly put the model in competition with some high end models from global brands like Toyota Innova. Even the lower priced models of D segment have fierce competition now with some really significant names like Fluence, Laura and Civic from carmaker like Renault, Skoda and Honda. So, Tata for now has postponed the entry into this segment.

Finally he said that their research showed a very pragmatic, innovative and cost effective solution for daily- use electric vehicles in a new urban environment and they believe the markets exist for a vehicle demonstrating this intelligent combination of performance, safety, function, price and environmental responsibility. And there is more to come. But it is not the end of the research, he added that this study is the first in a series of thought – provoking concepts to showcase out capabilities across the current and future automotive landscape.

Tata Safari Storme could adorn G85 Gear Box in future

Now that the Auto Expo is part of history we have to recall a few fond memories it has created. One remarkable concept that has been showcased at the event by Tata Motors was the G85 six-speed automatic gearbox. At the event the automatic variant of Tata Aria was displayed along with this gearbox. Reports were that the upgrade on this SUV will be done under the guidance of Tata’s alliance partner JLR and they have provided this gearbox. However, our sources have confirmed that this gearbox is developed by the transmission maker DANA for Tata Motors, Dana also developed drive shafts for commercial vehicles and especially for Tata world truck.

Tata Nano CNG lined for launch in 2012, exports could also begin

While diesel version of Tata Nano is not ready for a launch, and the 2012 Auto Expo saw unveiling of Tata Nano CNG along the Tata Pixel concept. At expo the important news was that the Tata Motors are planning to export their Nano CNG to Asian and European countries as well.This was stated by the Managing Director of Tata Motors India, PM Telang and he went on to explain business strategy for the world’s cheapest car. Reports are that Tata Motors plans to launch the CNG version of its Nano sometimes this year. Though the exact time for the launch is not declared yet, Telang, told the media that Nano CNG is definitely going to be launched very soon and the company is hopeful that it will be rolling the CNG version out this year.

As it was just an unveiling, there was no information regarding Tata Nano CNG price.He went on to add that entering into markets like Bangladesh, Myanmar and other South-East Asian countries including Thailand and Indonesia is part of the company’s future plan and this in short is the blueprint for a year. Interestingly, along with the launch of this model in the south Asian region the company is also working on developing a different version of Nano that will suit the European market.

Telang explained that they are looking for an appropriate car for the European market. As the current Nano, the model that is introduced in the India has different emission and safety specifications from that of the European market. If we change these fundamental technical aspects then it seems like the Nano for European market is going to be a substantially different car. Coming back to the Indian version, Tata Nano CNG pictures shows that it is going to be a good car for its segment. Tata Nano recalled for starter Motor

Tata Nano is getting a brand new starter motor. Tata India has made this move of installing new motors in the Nano which are running on the roads. The company has informed about 50,000 customers and they have successfully installed the starter motor in these cars. Tata Nano plans to set up a facility in Indonesia After the success of Tata Nano in India, the Indian automobile giant Tata Motors are now planning to start a manufacturing unit in Indonesia and this facility is equipped with a line to manufacture 50,000 units in a year. At present the feasibility checks are being made to establish the plant in Jakarta.

If the plan works out successfully then this would make Tata Motors a strong player in neighboring auto markets of Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand. Tata Motors has doubled their manufacturing capacity to meet with rising demand. Tata Motors has followed different marketing strategies to increase the sales of Nano which includes targeting specific markets in the small car segment, advertising and rolling out attractive offers with financing schemes. The result of good marketing strategy is the growing demand because of which the company is in the process of owing a plant in Indonesia to meet with the growing demands. On the decision of the Chief Financial Officer of the Tata Motors, C Ramakrishnan reveled that there is a high probability that the investment towards the research and development may follow an upward trend as new programmes and new projects start off. He added that 10-11 percent should be re invested. Reportingly, currently four products has been developed under Jaguar brand which include a small sports car, station wagon, entry level sedan and a crossover.

Moreover, the engineers are working towards developing an electric sedan called C-X75. The electric sedan is likely to return 900 km to a charge, with a top speed of 320 km/hr. Land Rover which is a sport utility vehicle brand is also working on the models which are likely to hit the Indian roads by 2011 and 2012-13. The brand is planning towards introducing an alternative of the hybrid cars as well as improving the current line-up. At present Jaguar and Land Rover is spending too much in India around Rs 2,500-3,000 crore annually on R&D.

Tata Motors’ total sales (including exports) of Tata commercial and passenger vehicles in October 2010 were 64,757 vehicles, a growth of 21 percent over 53,404 vehicles sold in October 2009. The company’s domestic sales of Tata commercial and passenger vehicles for October 2010 were 58,807 nos., a 16 percent growth over 50,552 nos. sold in October last year. Cumulative sales (including exports) for the company for the fiscal are 444,870 nos., a growth of 50 percent over 296,354 nos. sold last year.

The company’s sales of commercial vehicles in October 2010 in the domestic market were 34,329 nos., a 12 percent growth compared to 30,541 vehicles sold in October last year. LCV sales were 20,689 nos., a growth of 11 percent over October last year. M and HCV sales stood at 13,640 nos., a growth of 14 percent over October last year. Cumulative sales of commercial vehicles in the domestic market for the fiscal are 238,571 nos., a growth of 48 percent over last year. Cumulative LCV sales are 136,031 nos., a growth of 36 percent over last year, while M and HCV sales stood at 102,540 nos., a growth of 67 percent over last year.

The passenger vehicles business reported a total sale and distribution offtake of 26,503 nos. (24,478 Tata 2,025 Fiat) in the domestic market in October 2010, a 19 percent increase compared to 22,232 nos. (20,011 Tata 2,221 Fiat) in October last year. Sales of Tata passenger vehicles are 24,478 nos., a growth of 22 percent over October 2009. Sales of the Tata Nano were 3,065 nos., higher by 2 percent over October last year. The Indica range sales were 9,732 nos., higher by 1 percent over October last year. The Indigo range recorded sales of 8,292 nos., a growth of 69 percent over October last year. The Sumo/ Safari/ Aria range accounted for sales of 3,389 nos., higher by 38 percent over October last year. Jaguar Land Rover sales continued their upward trend.

Cumulative sales and distribution offtake of passenger vehicles in the domestic market for the fiscal are 187,539 nos. (173,651 Tata 13,888 Fiat), against 133,693 nos. (118,579 Tata 15,114 Fiat) last year, a growth of 40 percent. Cumulative sales of Tata passenger vehicles were 173,651 nos., a 46 percent increase compared to 118,579 nos., in October last year. Cumulative sales of the Nano are 40,467 nos., a 285 percent increase compared to 10,518 nos., in October last year. Cumulative sales of the Indica range are 58,634 nos., lower by 12 percent. Cumulative sales of the Indigo family are 52,063 nos., higher by 123 percent. Cumulative sales of the Sumo/Safari/ Aria range are 22,487 nos., higher by 24 percent. The company's sales from exports at 5,950 vehicles in October 2010 registered a growth of 109 percent compared to 2,852 vehicles in October last year. The cumulative sales from exports for the fiscal at 32,648 nos. are higher by 103 percent over 16,075 nos. in the same period last year.

The average increase is about Rs.9000/- (ex-showrooms), with prices varying from city to city and model to model. As of now, Tata Motors has announced open sales of the Tata Nano in the states of Kerala (since August 2010) and Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal (since October 2010). The company has tied up with 39 Banks, NBFC, Cooperative and Gramin Banks to offer customers with loans for purchasing the Tata Nano at attractive rates of interest. Tata Motors has successfully completed its issue of shares aggregating US$ 750 million, comprising ‘A’ Ordinary Shares aggregating US$ 550 million and Ordinary Shares aggregating US$ 200 million.

Pursuant to an overwhelming response from investors across India and internationally with a book size aggregating US$ 1.85 billion, the Company decided on October 4, 2010 to upsize the issue to US$ 550 million of ‘A’ Ordinary Shares and US$ 200 million of Ordinary Shares.

The company’s sales of commercial vehicles in August 2010 in the domestic market were 35,585 nos., a 20% growth compared to 29,762 vehicles sold in August last year. LCV sales were 20,734 nos., a growth of 11% over August last year. M&HCV sales stood at 14,851 nos., a growth of 34% over August last year.

Cumulative sales of commercial vehicles in the domestic market for the fiscal are 168,508 nos., a growth of 29% over last year. Cumulative LCV sales are 96,245 nos., a growth of 18%, while M&HCV sales stood at 72,263 nos., a growth of 49%. The passenger vehicles business reported a total sale and distribution offtake of 27,008 nos. (25,196 Tata + 1,812 Fiat) in the domestic market in August 2010, a 34% increase compared to 20,146 nos. (17,364 Tata + 2,782 Fiat) in August last year. Sales of Tata passenger vehicles are 25,196 nos., a growth of 45% over August 2009. Sales of the Tata Nano were 8103 nos., higher by 224% over August last year. The Indica range sales were 7,531 nos., lower by 22% over August last year. The Indigo range recorded sales of 6,678 nos., a growth of 151% over August last year. The Sumo/Safari range accounted for sales of 2,884 nos., higher by 11% over August last year. Jaguar Land Rover sales continued their upward trend.

Cumulative sales and distribution offtake of passenger vehicles in the domestic market for the fiscal are 135,509 nos. (125,296 Tata + 10,213 Fiat), against 90,718 nos. (80,392 Tata + 10,326 Fiat) last year, a growth of 49%. Cumulative sales of Tata passenger vehicles were 125,296 nos., a 56% increase compared to 80,392 nos., last year. Cumulative sales of the Nano are 31,882 nos., a 541% increase. Cumulative sales of the Indica range are 42,644 nos., lower by 9%. Cumulative sales of the Indigo family are 34,988 nos., higher by 132%. Cumulative sales of the Sumo/Safari range are 15,782 nos., higher by 18%. The company's sales from exports at 5,157 vehicles in August 2010 registered a growth of 92% compared to 2,684 vehicles in August last year. The cumulative sales from exports for the fiscal at 21,641 nos. are higher by 109% over 10,360 nos., last year.

Tata Motors entered into an understanding with IndusInd Bank

Tata Motors has entered into an understanding with IndusInd Bank for financing its range of passenger vehicles to provide an added facility of finance to its customers. A memorandum of understanding was signed by senior executives of both the companies today. Mr. R. Ramakrishnan Vice President, Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors Limited said, “The customers of Tata Motors will now have access to customised finance products from IndusInd Bank. We are sure that our growing network will also drive the tie-up to achieve the aspirational growth targets.

IndusInd ranks in the top retail financiers for Tata Motors commercial vehicle segment today and we are happy to extend this partnership for our passenger vehicle business as well. IndusInd Bank will be one of the preferred financiers for Tata cars and utility vehicles.” Announcing the tie-up, Mr S. V. Parthasarathy, EVP-Consumer Finance Division, IndusInd Bank said, “With this tie-up IndusInd Bank would be in a position to cater the financial needs of Tata Motors customers for the entire range of vehicles sold by Tata Motors. With their huge reach IndusInd Bank and Tata Motors would be able to cater to AAM AADMI .”
